Texas Road Trip 2025 – Day Four

Fredericksburg to San Antonio 103 miles. 11th October 2025.

It was back on the road today so after a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and sausages we loaded the car and headed off to our next destination. The roads leaving Fredericksburg were quiet and it was a pleasant drive through the rolling hills passing many of the vineyards on the way. The first stop was the small town of Bandera known as the cowboy capital of Texas and we reached the Main Street just as the shops were opening.

We made a quick call on the visitors centre to check out the attractions in the town before visiting the Cowboy Store and the towns general store, leaving with two more t shirts for the holiday.

When planning the holiday we had watched a number of YouTube videos and all the ones on Bandera mentioned eating at the Old Spanish Trail restaurant known locally as the OST.

We therefore had to give it a try and we were not disappointed. After eating breakfast not too long ago I thought a couple of pancakes would be a nice snack …….

The pancakes were huge and smothered with maple syrup, I actually struggled to finish them, but it was worth eating here for the atmosphere alone. We sat in a booth but could have chosen a saddle seat by the bar if we wanted.

Feeling rather full we drove just around the corner to the Frontier Times Museum, it was a short walk away from the Main Street but we were advised in the visitors centre that it was not walkable.

The museum was an eclectic mixture of relics that were substantially brought together by one man and included collections of bells, photos, books, stuffed animals, old machinery and skeletal remains of various critters. Alongside this was an interesting collection of cowboy memorabilia including saddles……..

Suitably cowboyed out we hit the trail again towards San Antonio and once more had a very enjoyable drive in the sunshine, that was until we hit the ring road. Here the traffic got a lot heavier and seemingly a lot faster, this coupled with miles of road works made the last part of the journey much less pleasant. Arriving at the hotel our spirits were lifted as we were upgraded to a suite.

The facilities at this Drury Inn hotel are first class with a rooftop pool and a free evening meal. We are here for 4 nights so look forward to enjoying all that it offers.
