San Antonio to Del Rio 156 miles. 15th October 2025.
We had a disturbed nights sleep last night as there was roadworks taking place outside the hotel until the early hours of the morning. I’m amazed at the amount of construction that is taking place on the road network and most of it is of a major nature with jack hammers banging away all night. It was therefore a relief to leave the chaos of the San Antonio roads behind and to hit the much quieter country roads that lead to our next destination.

Outside the city the roads were straight with very little traffic and the scenery changed to large areas of scrubland. We passed through a few small townships with shops and restaurants forming a strip along the highway. We stopped in Uvalde briefly for a coffee and shared a stack of pancakes before continuing to Del Rio.
Alongside the roadway for much of the journey was a rail track but unfortunately we didn’t see any of the long trains that often use these lines.

Tonight’s hotel is a La Quinta and first impressions are very good, with good free coffee in the lobby and tea bags for Sylvia. The hotel also has an outside swimming pool and BBQ area, both of which look very well maintained.

I took the opportunity to fill the car with petrol and was amazed at the price, a full tank of just over 11 US gallons (approx 42 litres) was £25.50!

We had a short drive into the town but we were a little disappointed as it looked a little worse for wear with lots of loan shops, but we are only here for the night so it doesn’t matter.

Interestingly the elevators in the hotel are made by a company called Schindler. In the U.K. they would of course be called Schindler’s Lifts.

Tomorrow another long drive to Alpine.
